Avid 30-Second Spot winners announced

The grand prize winners in the Avid 30-Second Spot contest have been announced and they are probably having fun hanging out at the Sundance Film Festival right now. The winner in the Professional's Choice category was "In the Halls of Avid, One is Many" by Aaron Osborne. This spot was shot in HD with the HVX200 and put together using Avid Xpress Pro and Adobe After Effects. The winner in the People's Choice category was "CaveMan" by Bob Chambers. It was shot with the Sony WS790 and created with Avid Media Composer Adrenaline and Digidesign Pro Tools. All the entries are posted so go check 'em out.

Make a trailer to play with 'Grindhouse'

You might be familiar with Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's upcoming co-op double feature film, Grindhouse. Now, the directors are offering a chance to screen your own sleazy, raunchy "grindhouse trailer" during a special presentation by Rodriguez at the upcoming SXSW. Rodriguez himself will select the best trailer from all submissions, which are due by February 12th, and play the winner during his "Robert Rodriguez's Grindhouse 101" discussion on Sunday, March 11th. Purty neat. Check out Mike's post for the complete rules.

Stockstock Film Festival

Stockstock Film Festival takes a different approach to the typical film fest by providing the video footage for you. Potential entrants must re-edit a pre-selected hodgepodge of stock film footage from the Prelinger Archives, keeping their short mashups under two minutes without any alternate materials allowed. Submissions must be uploaded to a video sharing website, and entries will be featured on the Stockstock website and later judged by a panel of producers. Best of all, entry to the fest is free, but donations are encouraged. Sounds like this might be a fun little exercise. Anyone interested might want to hurry up, though, because the deadline is February 11th.

iPod Film Festival 2007

The Flux has just announced their second iPod Film Festival, quite possibly the only fest dedicated to bringing quality short films to the screens of iPod owners around the globe. Festival entries are free thanks to a recent partnership between The Flux and Small Dog Electronics, and categories include Indie, Student, and Kitchen Sink. If you've got a short under ten minutes that is suitable for small screen viewing, this fest might be for you. Check the official site for more details and an entry form.

Famous movie scenes recreated from office supplies

Stationary Movies will keep you guessing
Ok, it is Friday and it is time to have a little fun. StationaryMovies.com has a 20 question quiz where you have to identify famous scenes from big movies that have been re-constructed from office supplies. The guys that put this together are very creative in utilizing their resources. You might want to have IMDB close by for movie title spellings. Have fun and post your scores in the comments below.

Dare Junkies: do you dare to take on this video competition?

Dare JunkiesDare Junkies is a new video sharing website with a difference. Each month it runs a competition where video creators are given dares in the form of challenges by Dare Junky users. Video creators must then go out and film the dare to take part in the competition. The top ten winners each month will split a cash prize of $5000.

Dare Junkies has only just launched in beta so is a little short of video and doesn't look like the best designed site on the net but co-creator Ben Bascol (who is a veteran of the entertainment industry) reminds everyone that "we are limited beta - a lot more features are going to be rolled out in the New Year," in an interview with NewTeeVee.

Ben Bascol goes on to say that "when users finally see really creative work posted it will only bolster their imaginations and drive to create something better and truly kick in artistic users' competitive energy."

Vote for the online video of the year

The 2006 Weblog Awards has a special section for the best video of the year. Contenders include The Internet Is For Porn, Mentos and Coke, Asian BSB, Brokeback to the Future and many more. Cast your vote by the 15th and help determine the winner!

Media Lab Spirit Awards Short Film Contest

IFC Media Lab and Film Independent are teaming up and hosting a challenge titled the Media Lab Spirit Awards Short Film Contest for all willing participants. With a super short time 90 second time requirement, filmmakers are asked to adapt the theme of "what does independence mean to you?" The final deadline is January 19, 2007, and voting will run from January 26th to February 16th. You must have a Media Lab account to submit. Give it a go.

SXSW submissions due December 8th

Final deadlines for film festival submissions in all categories (narrative feature, documentary feature, narrative short, documentary short, animated short, experimental short, and music video) for the 2007 SXSW fest in Austin, Texas are coming up on December 8th. If you've been hesitating to submit, there is precious little time to continue pondering. SXSW has grown to become a major player in the realm of film festivals, so give it a go if you think you've got the goods. Submission prices are $35 for shorts, and $45 for features. (Which is actually not a horrible deal considering the excellent reputatation of SXSW.) The film segment of the festival will run from March 9th to the 17th of 2007.

Earn some dough with your video on Break.com

Break.com
Break.com wants some fresh content and they want it bad. So much so that they are willing to pay $400 for video clips and $2,000 for original short films. Okay it isn't an upload and you are paid thing, Break.com has to select your masterpiece and feature it on their homepage before they shell out the green. But you have no chance to win if you don't upload so give it a shot. You never know, maybe other great opportunities will arise even if you don't make it on the home page.

More movie making on a deadline

I love time-limited video contests and someday I'll get up the nerve to actually enter one. But for now I'll just keep reading about other folks experiences. Here's a great story I found that follows filmmaker Phil Warren through his adventure in the Minnesota State University 48-hour Filmmaker Festival. His biggest challenge wasn't coming up with the story and shooting the footage, but dealing with iMovie crashes while in the final few hours of the contest. One comment I chuckled at had him wondering Why, oh why hadn't he learned Final Cut Pro with all the new fancy technology that might have made this process a breeze? Shhhhhh, nobody tell him that this stuff happens with the fancy editors too.

Filmmaking guerilla style

Here's a fun article to read. It's about a group of high school kids that were making a film as part of the Northwest Film Projections Guerilla Film Project. The contest is for students ages 15-18, and each team has to write, cast, film and edit a their movie in only 65 hours. The rules required them to include french fries, a can of sardines and the phrase "It's 100 percent vegan" in their movie. Now that's fun stuff. Don't expect any technical mumbo jumbo in this article. It's all about the kids and their experience. After reading the article, I wish I had been on one of the teams.

Avid users, here's a contest for you

Avid is challenging its users to create a commercial on what makes Avid the "professional" choice in editing systems. That's it, just make a commercial for Avid. All entries will be posted on contest partner MovieMaker Magazine's website to be voted on.

There are 2 categories, The People's Choice which will be voted on by the public and The Pro's Choice. I skimmed through the contest rules and regulations and found this concerning The Pro's Choice judging:

These entries will be judged by the Sponsor and an Avid customer, Chris Franklin of Big Sky Editorial in New York City. While the Sponsor will use reasonable efforts to review all entries, it reserves the right to review only the first 1,000 entries submitted.

So you might want to get your entry in early in case there's a stampede. Voting begins December 1, but you can upload your videos until December 31, which is weird. Obviously you should get your entry in by December 1 to maximize your chance of getting those public votes because winners will be announced the first week of January.

The People's choice winner receives a trip to the Sundance Film Festival in 2007. The Pro's choice winner goes to Sundance 2007 as part of the Avid team and has their entry shown throughout the festival. If your entry is one of the top 50 vote getters, you'll receive a free copy of Avid Xpress Pro software. All entries get a 6 month subscription to MovieMaker Magazine.

MotionZoneHD: Move It and win a crane

MotionZoneHD, a site for HD stock footage, is sponsoring a contest with the theme "Move It", which pretty much means what you think it means. You can submit up to 10 high def clips for the contest where the camera must be moving. It can be on a crane, dolly, plane, car, hand-held etc, anything that puts the camera in motion. First place is a Kessler KC-8 Crane, second place is Barry Green's HVX200 book and 3rd place gets a MotionzoneHD.com T-shirt. The contest runs through December.

Win an After Effects training DVD

After Effects 7 PowerStart DVD
DV Creators has released an After Effects training DVD designed to help you learn After Effects from the beginning through advanced techniques. Now instead of forking over some dough, you can get your hands on a copy for free thanks to a contest on the Coolness Roundup Podcast. All you have to do is write a 300-500 word review of a consumer product by November 15th and send it in to questions@coolnessroundup.com. They'll pick the best 2 entries and those winners will receive a copy of the After Effects PowerStart DVD. I suppose you could always just buy it for $79.95, but where's the fun in that?
